Mediocrities of the world unite! Another year, another batch of decently okay movies getting nominated for Oscars. It's a banner year in many ways as Netflix finally landed in the Best Picture race—as did Marvel, Spike Lee made it into the Best Director category at last, and Viggo Mortensen earned a Best Actor nomination for playing a horrendous Italian-American stereotype. Every time the Oscars takes a step forward, they immediately remember that they forgot something back where they were and they promised to be back really soon, and then you go back there to see what happened and they're smoking a cigarette and talking to Kevin Spacey.
Seriously though, my top three films of the year: The Death of Stalin, Widows, and First Man, are pretty much nowhere to be found—the latter earned some technical noms, but was shut out of the major categories. Bohemian Rhapsody, the patron saint of mediocrity, also landed far more nominations than it deserved. Green Book will likely win Best Picture at this point, which is disappointing but ultimately not that surprising. The Oscars do this all the time, something truly groundbreaking comes along and they go with the movie where the white guy learns that it's not okay to be a racist. Le sigh.
As for the acting categories, you'd better hope you're in a movie with a Best Picture nomination to even get seen this year. 15 of the 20 acting slots are filled by actors from only 6 films, and only four of those six have a Best Picture nomination. That's kind of a crazy statistic when you think about it, and gives those actors a big leg up on all the rest.
