Superman: Gay Rumours and Package Issues

Is Superman Gay? Is his "package" too big? Will his shorts be digitally retouched? These are the questions currently surrounding the production of Superman Returns.

According to the British tabloid The Sun, Warner Bros. is concerned with the size of actor Brandon Routh's cod-piece in the new Superman film. I know that there was much discussion during pre-production as to the size of Superman's package, but that was seemingly all settled. And if there were problems, you would think that they would have fixed after seeing the dailies on the first day. That's why this quote from the tabloid rings a bit false:

An insider said last night: "It's a major issue for the studio. Brandon is extremely well endowed and they don't want it up on the big screen. We may be forced to erase his package with digital effects."

Meanwhile Radar Online is saying that Routh was chosen to play Superman because of the size of his member, and that director Bryan Singer (who most people in the industry say is gay) wanted a new boy toy. I think that's crap too. I couldn't care less, one way or the other if Singer, or Routh (who has a longtime girlfriend) are gay or not, but the speculation is just juvenile.

Of course, if Singer cast an object of his desire in a role, it wouldn't be the first time. According to Alex Burton, the unknown who played Pyro in Singer's first X-Men blockbuster, he was given the part after a hot-tub session with the director at a Hollywood party. "Bryan created that role especially for me," says Burton, who went on to act in exactly zero films post-X-Men.
