Natalie Portman Likes Being Shaved

The mainstream media can be a little slow in reporting the news. Take this article from USA Today, for example, all about how Natalie Portman shaved her head for her role in V for Vendetta. I seem to remember posting that Natalie Portman was bald back in May (and for the past 10 months, actually).

Anyway, while the mainstream press points out the painfully obvious, our pals at Defamer made the astute observation that a young Jewish girl discussing the liberating feeling of having her head shaved in front of a room full of Germans might strike some as a little discomforting.

Natalie Portman says she fulfilled a long-standing ambition by shaving her head for the sci-fi thriller V for Vendetta.

"I was really excited to get to shave my head -- it's something I'd wanted to do for a while and now I had a good excuse," Portman told reporters at the Berlin International Film Festival. "It was nice to shed that level of vanity for a girl."

However, "I wasn't used to being looked at so much," the 24-year-old actress said. "Walking down the street, I can usually blend in, and people really stare at you when you're a girl with a shaved head."

What I find a little discomforting, however, is Natalie Portman's dress. The black is great, her legs are amazing, the make-up and hair are flawless. The seemingly Bjork-inspired bottom half of her dress, on the other hand, is, well, not. There's no reason for it, and I can't quite fathom a reason for anyone to have ever thought there was. A slinky black dress would have been understated, and genuinely powerful. Right now she looks like a deleted scene from Episode III.
